wow, what a week! am sitting in a manga kisaten in the shibuya district of tokyom and its 2 30 in the morning. you:ll have to forgive my atrocious typing, it:s a japanese keyboard and i haven:t the faintest fucking idea where anything is. you can rent a small room in a kisaten (and check out manga and dvds) for the obscenely low price of 980 yen (around 9 bucks) for 6 hours. by far the cheapest accomodation plan in tokyo.
my friemd and i have been walking for the past 3 days. seriously. walking for the entire time. i must have walked 25 miles at least. throughout kyoto and tokyo. i head back to kobe tomorrow afternoon, which will be a very boring 7 hour bus ride. i should be sleeping now, but i figure i should wait for it. i really feel like i:m experience tokyo this way, haha. it is a cramped city (except the port area of Odaiba, which is gorgeous) and people are everywhere, and all the capsule hotels are filled for the entire weekend. so manga shop it is.
i bought so much useless crap here. the prices are pretty much the same as the US (except every meal costs freakin $30). i buy whatever i see that is interesting, cute, whatever. you think you:re getting a better deal here tho, cuz service is better and packaging is all nice and somehow you think everything is better quality. i was watching my friend (one who:s currently living in tokyo) buy a shirt from Zara for $70, and he said that was really cheap for a shirt here. good lord.
anyway, i:m back to shanghai on the 9th (tuesday) and it:s been a hell of a vacation so far, but i:ll be glad to be back home. going to japan has made me realized how terrible and useless my japanese language class at school has been. i:m pretty jealous of my friend who:s doing JET rigt now. his japanese is pretty much fluent. yeeesh. punch myself in the face. at least it inspires me to stufy my ass off of chinese when i get back.
this entire livejournal interface is also in japanese. fun.
i:ll post pictures when i get back to shanghai. easier to document that way than to explain everything i:ve done. espedcialy on this retarded kaeyboard.
anne i can:t find the dog stuffed in a tired character anywhere in japan. i think the anime conventions made it up.

Happy Mid Autumn Festival! Time to mooncakes and family gatherings.
Here's the story behind this holiday:
Way back in ancient China, there were 10 suns rising in the sky. It got really hot and crops and people died, and everything fuckin blew.
This supercool archer named Yi, had this awesome bow that could kill anything. He also had a really hot wife, named Chang E.
One morning he shot down 9 of the suns, and told the 10th to only rise for half of the day, and leave for the rest. To thank him, a goddess gave him a magical elixer that would grant immortality among the celestial beings. he ran home to share this with his wife. and then he left. and some evil guy came and tried to steal the elixer, and Chang E, in a moment of panic i assume, drank all the elixer herself, and along with her pet rabbit, began to float up to the moon. Yi came back, was like, what the shit! but it was too late. bitch took the elixer. and so she's in the moon til this day, with her pet bunny. but Yi got sad, so he and everyone else in the village made mooncakes.
what a weird story.

Also, avril concert was fun! Tho chinese people are really lame concert goers. sure everybody had glowsticks, but it wasn't really moshy or punkish or anything. I mean, i was probably the most brazen person there. me. :p so... yeaah. She did a cover of All the Small Things by Blink182. She also did all of her hits. I missed girlfriend tho, as that was the first song and we got there late. the booking company set up these shuttle buses, and it was just *insane* the number of people cramming to get on. It was actually really painful getting jammed through the sliding door panels of a bus. crazy people. then we all kind of ran from the parking lot to the concert venue. lol.
then we all got a massage after. my two friends (both guys) spent the entire time flirting shamelessly with the massage jiejie's.

Lol. I am going to see the Avril Lavigne concert tomorrow. She's supposedly going to sing Girlfriend in Chinese. Haha. Or, lipsynch to a pre-recorded version, rather.
Sometimes it baffles me that I'm still in Shanghai.
The heat is still wild and I signed up for a pole dancing class. It's a legit class/form of exercise here... Ought to be intersting. They also have a lot of belly dance courses here. But Chinese people are notoriously bad dancers, so we'll see how it goes.
I also finally saw Blades of Glory, and the Simpsons movie. Both were great! Ooh, and also saw HP5 in theaters. Also ok. I dunno, for some reason all the actors in the HP movies (and they always have tremendous casts) seem so restrained. Like, no one's really acting. They're all trapped in pages of a book or something. Also, book 5 was a retarded book. So... whatever.

Today when I woke up I wandered around town for a bit, and talked to a couple of clowns. It was for some weird promotional thing, but i got a free watch out of the deal. Afterwards i was walking through some tall grass and these little animals came up to me. I beat them up and stuffed them into a ball, and carry them around with me. some people give me startled looks, but then i beat them up as well.
and that's pretty much all i did today.

It's been a while since the Great Firewall of China has banned lj (and it's still banned) so I tend to keep forgetting it's there. Grr. My proxies can't even always get around it, very irritating.
In the recent 3 months that I haven't posted...
I've moved out into the west part of Shanghai into my own apartment (will upload pics soon), and it's a much more convenient location, and it's a lot of fun to have my own place. Well, I've got a roommate, but he's cool. He's art directing the next American McGee game (this entire time, I had no idea that American McGee is a person, not a company), Grimm. Maybe i'll get to do voice acting for it, which would be totally cool.
I've entertained three guests in Shanghai, one from NY, one from Beijing, and one from Kobe. All three were friends from school. So ya'll know what THAT means. Some cool peeps from Chicago better start visiting soon. :p Hugs and kisses.
i can't believe it's almost been a year since I've been working in Shanghai.

I think I finally found a proxy server that takes cookies! rock on. rock on indeed. maybe now I'll actually be able to leave comments in everyone else's journals. :D
work is really picking up and May Holiday (first week of may) is coming up soon so we've got a lot of deadlines to meet. Today was raining and I had two meetings with photography studios in the morning and I was totally wet and also I spilled some tea on my shirt. Splendid. But other than that work is overall going well. Ya'll should move to Shanghai. We can hang out and play games.
I realize I end up doing the same thing here as I did in the US. This weekend I played drunken God of War and Amplitude, and also watched the latest Naruto episode in some one's dorm room. Tho I actually haven't seen Naruto in ages. The anime is still really far behind the manga. It's like, almost just after the timeskip. And the ep was stupid, but really the experience was fun. Like, no matter where I am in the world, there will always be someone arguing about ninja power levels or laughing at the little fat frog.
i went on a 'date-like' setting with a guy when i was still interested in some one else. does that make me a bitch. whenever i start feeling funny about relationships (and not having them) i just watch a lot of sex and the city. god, i need a girl to talk to here.

I won a pair of crocs at a networking event. Odd prize? yes. i've never owned crocs before. they are ugly. but kinda cute?? no one in china buys them however, so they're doing all sorts of mad giveaways. I think people here are just too shallow to choose comfort over appearances.

i did not drink at all on sat night, am very satisfied. i feel everyone likes drinking and it's always there to have a good time. but sobriety is good!
Visited Jiao Tong University, which is the first uni I've visited in Shanghai! very exciting. The campus looks a lot more like a western campus that I thought it would have. There's a little less green space, but there's definitely a lot trees and large fancy old-looking buildings. Also went into a Chinese dorm for the first time. Also looks a *lot* like western dorms. high ceilings, wooden furniture, two beds per room, bathroom inside. Of course tho, these were the international student dorms, which are a hell of a lot more expensive than what the local students get to use. The locals (whose dorms i have yet to visit) sleep four to a room in double bunks.
My cousin, who goes to another school near shanghai, gets her electricity shut off at 11pm to force the students to go to bed. What a gawd-awful miserable time.

I'm partial to anything that'll let me have a good time. ;p The only one i actively avoid is tequila. ugh. bad times. The most popular alcohols here (what's seen as really high class, anyway) are johnnie walker and chivas, both of which i never had til i got to shanghai. They mix a lot of johnie with bottled green tea. Which disguises it pretty well I think, because it tastes like tea and I end up really drunk.
Bah. When are they gonna unblock this? This blocked blogspot as well. I'm running out of options here. Also, I started watching Heroes. Cute show! i'm so glad to know one of the stars, adam kim. hahaha.

Access is available only through illegal proxy servers, meaning now its a helluva lot harder to access, and i have to look at a lot of floating pr0n ads. :p

I'm gonna try and be an extra in the movie Simon West is making about nanjing during wwII. that would be so cool. i just read iris chang's book and it is so fucking impactful. everyone should read it.

About this grand holiday:
The earliest inklings of this holiday may be attributed to the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalis, which occurred on Feb. 15th. Lupercalis was an annual fertility fest where naked singles would be coupled up through a lottery system, and then the young women would be subjected to being slapped by sacrificial goat skins in an effort to increase their child bearing powers. Then everyone would eat, drink, and have sex- which is really the only parallel one can make with modern Valentine's Day.

Holidays stateside were a lot of fun, a lot of excitement. I have tons of pictures that I still have to post.
The DOA movie looks SO bad, I want to see it. it seems like it'll be really entertaining, or a really great drinking game or something.
Lately all of my time has been consumed by FFXII. this game is fuckin amazing. tho heavily influenced by LOTR in the surprisingly well-translated script. and the voice acting rocks! i mean, FFX was like, good for it's time, but in retrospect, it sucked. especially yuna.
plotline is awesome. I've put in many hours into the game, and storyline wise I still only have 1 summon. Which is great, cuz i hope it'll like, go on forver or something. Also some of the bosses are pretty ridiculously hard.
also i think it's similar to star wars. balthier is like han solo, which i guess makes fran his wookie. lol. ashe is the rebellious princess, and vaan is the idiot farm boy.
becase there's only 1 tv in the apartment, i let the rest of the family have it during the day, which means i play it in the middle of the night. so my sleep hours are like, 9pm-2am. play play play. then have an eye rest from 6:30-7, then time to get ready for work. i'm so ashamed. >_> I'm also surprised that i'm still functioning. Well, i'm probably not paying attention very much, as i'm writing LJ at work. both my bosses are coming in late, so i'm like, wtf, i could have used an extra hour of sleep.
